I was the small kid. Every year I got passed over for guys who were bigger, threw harder, and had somebody in their corner making calls for them. I loved the game and I could play, but nobody knew who I was. My family didn't know how any of this worked either. We just kept showing up and hoping the right person would walk by our field.
Nothing happened until the very end of my senior year. That's when it finally came together, and I ended up at NC State as a two-way guy. Pitching didn't pan out for me there, but hitting did. I got drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and spent six years in their organization, then a year with the Padres. My last season I got hurt. I fought my way back and hit a home run in my final professional game.
Here's why I'm telling you this. None of it happens if I don't end up in the right program with the right fit. That one decision changed my entire life, and it almost didn't happen. My family spent my whole senior year stressed out and in the dark, and that's the part I never want another family to go through. I've walked over 300 families through this process since.
